UMS4 scanning tank

UMS4 is an advanced scanning system designed to provide users a comprehensive ultrasound measurements and characterisation platform for the purposes of research, development, and quality assurance.

If you have any specific questions about our scanning tanks, please contact us.

UMS4 scanning tanks

Overview

Our redesigned scanning system integrates a robust, highly accurate 3D positioning system with a Precision Acoustics developed control software package. This control software package manages the synchronisation requirements for scanning, data storage, and post-scan acoustic processing and computation.

Ultrasound measurements rely on the ability to measure accurately the acoustic field. The UMS4 system has three motorised axes (x,y,z) each capable of a 5-micron repeatability.  The system is supplied complete with an electronic control module and a PC with preloaded UMS software.  The software is optimised for interaction with Keysight Technologies DSO-X 3000 series oscilloscopes and is supplied with a Keysight DSOX3024A model. However, the software also works with many other modern oscilloscopes. Also included with the system are mounting solutions for both hydrophones and transducers.

To simplify purchasing for our clients, we can also supply all power amplifiers and function generators.

More information about the UMS system and software is available on the UMS specification page.

Optional Extras

Recommended optional extras for UMS4 include:

  • Hydrophone Gimbal – A high-precision, multi-axis rotational platform purpose-built for integration with the UMS4.
  • Rotary Table – positioning device to facilitate accurate alignment of the transducer’s acoustic axis with the hydrophone
  • Water Treatment Kit – designed to provide users with a method for addressing the pitfalls that come with using tap water for conducting acoustic measurements.
  • Thermocouple – connects with UMS software allowing temperature to be recorded in your measurements
Training – A PA member of staff will travel to your facilities and provide 2 days of training to you and your team.

3D scanning tanks FAQ's

The majority of acoustic measurements are made in water. However, whilst being cheap and readily available, tap water is not ideal for conducting acoustic measurements and should be conditioned before use in a test tank. For more information see our document on water treatment.

For measurements on diagnostic scanners we recommend an oscilloscope with sufficient bandwidth and high sampling rate.  The oscilloscope is an essential part of our system and we have designed our software around the Keysight Technologies (formerly Agilent) range of oscilloscopes. We usually supply an oscilloscope from the DSO-X 3000 series but we have configured the software for most oscilloscopes in this range.  There are also other scopes in the LeCroy and Tektronix ranges that are supported. Please contact us if you have an non-Keysight Technologies oscilloscope to confirm whether it is supported.  Even if it is not we may be able to write additional software to extend support to your device

Our software was originally designed to measure the acoustic parameters which relate to ultrasound safety. All measurements rely on the measurements being made with a calibrated hydrophone. If your application is not medical we can customise the software to display those parameters which are relevant to your work. Please contact us with your requirements.
