PVdF and P(VdF-TrFE) Co Polymer Film

PVdF and its co-polymers are the two most widely known piezo-polymers. PVDF exhibits strong piezo- and pyro-electric response, and has an acoustic impedance that is much closer to water than conventional piezo-ceramic materials. These properties have made it highly desirable for the productions of ultrasonic sensors. PVdF is chemically resistant, and is mechanically resilient. However, its piezo-properties will start to degrade if exposed to elevated temperatures will begin to unlock the polarisation necessary for the piezo-electric properties of the film. As a general rule, PVdF should be kept and used below 60°C and exposure to temperatures above 100°C is likely to remove the majority of piezo-electric behaviour.

P(VdF-TrFE) is a co-polymer of PVdF with Trifloroethylene. It has greater piezo-electric output than PVdF and has better thermal stability with reported operating temperatures as high as 100°C. The disadvantage with co-polymer is that it tends to be a more difficult material to fabricate and stress cracks/fractures can be problematic.

To facilitate our customers who wish to purchase small quantities of piezo-electric polymers we stock a range of poled and unpoled PVdF and poled co-polymer film. Some of the different options are listed below:

Film typeRoll or sheet Available thickness
Unpoled, uniaxially oriented film (capable of supporting polarisation) Roll 9, 12, 16 and 22 micron
Poled, uniaxially oriented film (strong d33 and d31 behaviour, weak d32 behaviour) Roll 28, 52 and 110 micron
Poled, biaxially oriented film (strong d33 and moderate d31 and d32 behaviour) Sheet 9, 25 and 40 micron
Poled co-polymer film Sheet 25, 50 and 100 micron

All films can be supplied without electrode coatings. Alternatively they can be supplied with one or both sides having sputtered metal electrodes. If metal electrodes are required on one side only, please indicate if the electrode is required on the positive or negative side. Electrodes are typically gold on chrome although silver and gold on platinum are also used.

Our Price List shows the most widely used options but for more information please contact us with your requirements.
